My Role

I led the full redesign of People’s Store e-commerce platform for SterlingTech, handling everything from research and ideation to design and handoff. The goal was to make the platform easier to use, simplify navigation, and improve user adoption with a clean, user-focused interface. I worked closely with a Product Manager, a Frontend Developer, and a Backend Developer.

Stakeholder Engagement

I worked with the stakeholder to understand the product’s challenges, the purpose of the redesign (including a shift in brand identity), and the vision of success. Together, we agreed on these objectives:

  • Design a clean, intuitive interface that follows UX best practices

  • Make product discovery and navigation simpler

  • Increase user engagement and adoption

  • Improve conversions and reduce drop-offs

Product Audit

I conducted a UX audit of the existing platform using UX heuristics to identify issues that needed improvement. The key challenges found were:

  • Poor navigation

  • Unclear product categorization

  • Friction in the checkout process

  • Unconvincing user interface

  • Weak visual hierarchy

  • Poor mobile responsiveness

Competitor Analysis

Following the UX audit, I conducted a competitive analysis to understand how leading e-commerce platforms in Nigeria approached similar challenges. I studied direct competitors like Jumia and Konga, as well as indirect competitors such as JiJi and Olist. The analysis focused on navigation, checkout processes, product categorization, and overall UI intuitiveness. This helped identify industry best practices and gaps that could inform the redesign strategy.

Key Insights from Competitive Analysis

  • Navigation: Leading platforms like Jumia and Konga use clear, consistent menus and search functionality, making product discovery easier.

  • Checkout Process: Streamlined checkout with fewer steps and multiple payment options improves completion rates.

  • Product Categorization: Well-structured categories and filters help users find products faster.

  • UI Intuitiveness: Clean layouts, trust-building visuals, and mobile-friendly designs increase user confidence and engagement.

Design Opportunities Identified

  • Simplify Navigation: Create a clear and consistent menu structure with a strong search feature to reduce user frustration.

  • Optimize Checkout: Design a faster, frictionless checkout flow with multiple secure payment options.

  • Refine Product Categorization: Reorganize product categories and add intuitive filters for easier product discovery.

  • Enhance UI Trust & Intuitiveness: Build a modern, clean interface with strong visual hierarchy and trust-building elements (e.g., secure icons, product reviews).

  • Leverage Mobile Responsiveness: Ensure seamless experiences on mobile devices to capture a wider audience.

User Flow and Design Approach

Based on insights from the UX audit and competitive analysis, I designed a user flow that ensures a smooth experience from the very first entry point to product discovery and through to checkout. The goal was to remove friction at every stage and create a journey that feels natural and effortless for the user.

This user flow became the foundation for my design decisions. It guided how I structured navigation, organized product categories, and streamlined the checkout process. Building on this flow, I designed a new user interface that is clean, intuitive, and aligned with UX best practices, ultimately improving usability and supporting the business goals.

Challenges and Key Learnings

Challenges:

  • The redesign had to work within the constraints of an existing backend architecture.

  • Every design decision needed to align with the backend system.

  • I had no prior knowledge of backend programming, which added complexity.

How I Overcame It:

  • Maintained constant communication with the backend engineer.

  • Adapted design choices based on backend guidance and limitations.

  • Ensured collaboration kept the project moving smoothly without blocking progress.

Key Learning:

  • Communication is critical in design and product development. It keeps everyone aligned on the same objectives and helps the team work together toward a shared goal.
